2 Months OldToday my sweet boy is 2 months old. I have decided to do a portrait of him on his birthday each month that exemplifies an event or milestone from the previous month. This past month we spent a lot of time at baseball games, hence this picture.
Grayson has had a rough time so far. This past week we had to have him hospitalized for severe bronchitis. I took him to his pediatrician on Tuesday because he was having difficulty breathing. Both Morgan and I are extremely sensitive to his breathing because he has already been hospitalized once, when he was a week old, because he was turning blue. Our fears for his health played a big role in Morgan's early return from his last trip.
His doctors said that his breathing was not normal, and sent me directly to the hospital. We use German doctors and facilities, because as civilians we are low priority at the American hospital. So I sped to the hospital in Kaiserslautern. It's interesting, I avoid the autobahn usually, because it makes me nervous. But when your child's health is in question, those insignificant anxieties dissolve, and you do what you have to do. (I'll write another post on driving in Germany).
When we arrived at the hospital, they saw him right away. Their first guess was RSV and pneumonia. They admitted us. Because I am nursing they gave us a room with a bed for me.
We spent two days there, during which time he was hooked up to an IV, received regular nebulizer treatments, and got lots of rest. The doctors were great. The nurses were very nice, and we managed to communicate between their limited English, my limited German, and hand signals. I ate in the cafeteria, and couldn't help flashing back to high school as I sat there, all by myself, hoping no one noticed me. What is it about cafeterias?
Well, we are home now, and he is doing so much better. He is still on his medications, and we are doing inhaler treatments.
I know that it could have been worse, and I am so grateful that it wasn't. Nothing makes a parent feel more scared or helpless than their children being sick. I watched my mom as she spent countless hours and nights in hospitals with some of my siblings, and I couldn't help thinking about her, and what it must have been like. I don't think I ever really understood, and I still don't completely comprehend what she went through.
I am now keeping him sheltered from human contact outside of our home. The price I pay for that is cabin fever. Thank goodness for my virtual world in cyberspace!

Sorry to hear sweet grayson was so sick! I hope he is better soon. Miss you tons. Wish I was there to help you out;) You are such a good mom! :)
That's scary. I'm glad you're home and that Gray is doing better.
Oh mel I am so sorry that he has been so sick, I hate hospitals. I am glad that morgan was able to come home and be there for you. Take care, Jess
I'm glad Grayson is better! My daughter was hospitalized with RSV two years ago and I agree that when your baby is sick, you will set aside your fears to take care of him. Good thing you're in Germany and not Romania. Now THAT would have been scary!
Oh, that's frightening! rsv is scary-- you must've been beside yourself! I think staying home is worth it, don't you? I learned as our numbers grew that no obligation was more important than those first few months to just treasure the baby-- they're little for such a little time. Think of all the photos you'll be able to post now that you're sequestered :-)
Wow, that's scary! We're so glad that Grayson is okay. We'll be praying for him to get all the way better. I'm so glad to hear the medical care was so good for him there. I hope that Morgan is able to stay a little closer to home with all that's going on (although I do know how OSI works...). We miss you guys. By the way, Grayson is adorable in his baseball outfit. I think it's so cool you're taking a photography class. How are you doing it? I'd love to take one too.
oops... that comment was left by me - and Mike too, but I'm the one interested in the photography ;)
Hi Sis,
I pray for your precious baby everynight that he will be healthy! Being sick all the time is the pits! I miss all of you!
Love, Holly!
Oh poor little guy. It amazes me how strong they can be though. We will keep him in our prayers. I wish we could help with the cabin fever situation. That is really hard for kids to understand. Best of Luck!!! :)
I'm so glad that he's fine and that the hospital was so wonderful. That can make all the difference.
Emily needs a padded cell! She loves to throw her toys around because of the loud noise it makes. She also like to slam doors and escape from things. Her most favorite thing is to try to get out the front door and scoot away.
We think of you guys often and hope all is well with your family.
